Asus V6800V Review

The look of the thin and light Asus V6800v (shorted V6V) is very nice, simple and dark aluminum with blue leds futuristic looking. This notebook actually uses a magnet to hold the screen down when closed;the system works well for preventing any papers or other miscellaneous junk sliding between the keyboard and LCD screen. On the top of the keyboard you have some buttons well hidden in the design, buttons that may be very useful: Touchpad Disable/Enable, Power Mode/Notebook, Usage mode switch, Bluetooth On/Off, Open Web Browser,Turn Wireless On/Off, including the Power Button.

The 15 inch LCD has one of the biggest resolution I’ve seen on a laptop: 1400 x 1050 - this is problably most effective for code writers. Also, on this laptop you don’t just have excellent horizontal viewing angles, but also good vertical angles and a stronger backlight than is typical. The ports are not located at the back because of the design, but most of them are on the right side and some on the left: PCMCIA slot, Infrared port, FireWire (IEEE 1394) port, Mini VGA/D-sub port; power jack port, modem jack, Ethernet/LAN port, four USB 2.0 ports, microphone-in, headphone out, multicard reader.

The V6V offers a full sized keyboard and an easy to use touchpad with scroll area and smooth, flat buttons. Overall I’d say this keyboard is a bit better than a Dell Inspiron but not as good as an IBM Thinkpad. The configuration (Pentium M 750 1.86GHz processor with a 5400RPM hard drive and 512MB of RAM) makes the work with many opened programs quite easy and fast for any office job. The sound on the Asus V6V is pretty good, it makes little or no noise, but it gets quite warm under intense use. The battery life with Wi-Fi on, screen at half brightness and some opened programs will hold up to 3 hours.
