Dell XPS M1330 Review

The new XPS M1330 was touted as the thinnest 13.3″ notebook and just under 4 lbs with the 4-cell battery and LED backlit display, boasted a radically new design for Dell, maintaining the multitude of colored lids for customers to personalize their laptop.
If you want a slylish portable 13.3 inch laptop, this one is to be considered. Along with the XPS M1330 itself there are more items that come in the package: Dell XPS branded laptop sleeve, Creative EP630 earbuds and an IR remote that fits into the ExpressCard slot. One of the main features of the XPS M1330 is the optional LED backlit display, which touts better color reproduction, higher brightness, lower power consumption and a thinner panel. This laptop also comes with a Creative webcam that can take video at up to 640×480 resolution while still pictures can be taken at up to 1280×1024.

The finish of the lid is matte and, unfortunately, picks up a lot of fingerprints, which are difficult to remove, but otherwise, the design is almost flavless: hinge design is quite aesthetically pleasing, but the implementation leaves a bit to be desired. Unlike other dell models, this one comes with a silver keyboard like the palm rest, leaving the surronding of the screen to be the only black part. While careful at the design, Dell was not paing attention to the build (related to manufacturing, not the materials used): the aluminum may separate from the base of the chassis. Also, if enough pressure is applied the entire display will flex, due to the thin design.

the number of I/O ports is relatively limited on the XPS M1330: a mic input, two headphone outputs, and an 8-in-1 card reader for various types of SD cards, MMC, xD and Memory Stick, slot-load DVD burner, an attachment for a computer lock, only 2 USB ports, a 4-pin Firewire, HDMI, 10/100mb Ethernet, a HD-15 VGA output and the power jack. While the performance of the processor will not be a problem, the XPS M1330 is the first XPS not to focus on gaming performance when it comes to graphic card. The speakers, located at the top of the laptop, above the media controls, can get pretty loud, but there’s minimal bass response. The keyboard. standard for a laptop in matter of size and key position, is fairly firm, with the slightest bit of flex. The responsive touchpad has some texture to it, with a good amount of travel and no loud click. Dell offers a 6-cell and 9-cell combo, allowing long battery life to its users.
