Fujitsu’s First Biodegradable Notebook

Fujitsu LifeBook appears to be the first worldwide laptop who is really… biodegradable!

“Tokyo, June 5, 2002–Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of the world’s first eco-friendly notebook computer housing to use plant-based biodegradable plastic.”

Later on you will start to see stuff like this not just in Japan, but also in the U.S. and Europe - still more expensive.
This laptops is based on a plastic material made from cornstarch rather than petroleum. This will degrade sooner than the usual plastic and, as a bonus, 15 percent less carbon emissions (left in a landfill it will go away over the course of months while the usual plastic will take decades to disappear).

In addition, the use of this material not only eliminates emissions of dioxins and other harmful chemicals if incinerated, it reduces the use of petroleum products from the start. Furthermore, it takes less energy to produce-about half that of conventional plastic components- making the production process itself more environmentally friendly, and, by using all natural materials, contributes to lower consumption of petroleum.

In the end, let’s remember that eco-friendly meas: procurement policies, recycling and pollution control. Every laptop can be harmless for the environment if we use it properly from the minute we build it to after we destroy it to recover materials.
