Panasonic ToughBook W4 Review

Panasonic ToughBook W4
The W4 is part of their semi-rugged ultra portable laptop series from Panasonic. It has a very nice and elegant design, all silver, all magnesium alloy casing. It is very solid and also includes a shock mounted hard drive for extra protection. The Panasonic W4 uses a 12.1″ anti-glare non-glossy, matte finished LCD screen. The W4 uses the Pentium M 753 Ultra Low Voltage processor running at 1.2 GHz and Intel GMA integrated graphics which uses up to 128 MB of the system memory. As with many smaller laptops, the speakers are not very good. All this means that for watching movies and other basic multimedia tasks, the integrated chipset is good enough, but you need headphones or external speakers.

The optical drive isn’t typical side loading found in most laptops: it is located at the right side of the palm rest and it opens upward when you press the optical drive switch. All of the ports are located on the two sides of the machine except the microphone/headphone jacks as well as a main power and Wi-Fi power switches which can be found at the front of the laptop.
This notebook is whisper quiet, but does produce some heat, especially at the highest processing speeds. The W4 uses an 83-key keyboard, with “tab” and “caps lock” quite small and FN key used for page down and page up keys. The touchpad is not only responsive and comfortable, but it has a cool circular design. With Wi-Fi off you might get over 6 hours of battery life which is more than good, it’s excellent.
