Toshiba Tecra M9 Review

This business laptop is using the latest 800MHz Santa Rosa Intel platform on the inside and a very basic and professional looking on the outside. The display cover and keyboard are a simple matte silver color, while the rest of the notebook is black plastic. However, it’s not so solid: the palmrest and keyboard have flex, which is pretty uncommon for this class of notebooks. Plus, the notebook does get very warm at the bottom.

It’s screen has a high level of sparkle, but with the excessive matte texture most intense colors appear to be washed out. Brightness levels are good, horizontal viewing angels also, but midrange colors appear to wash out or completely disappear while moving vertically above or below normal viewing angles. The keyboard, however, is very comfortable, key texture feels perfect for a business notebook and it has also been improved with spill resistant covering to help protect against accidental spills of liquids. The speakers included with this laptop are average for built-in speakers on business laptops, and below average compared to most consumer notebooks.

In front of the laptop you have wireless on/off switch, firewire connector, headphone/mic jacks, and volume, on the left side a modem jack, Kensington lock slot, exhaust port, one USB port, PC-Card Slot, and SD card slot, and two USB ports, the optical bay, and the LAN port are at the back. The basic configuration made of T7500 Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1BG RAM and Nvidia NVS 130M graphics card is suitable and performant for any business task, even some not very demanding games. With screen brightness at 80%, wireless enabled, and easy tasks, the system enables 2 hours and 29 minutes life on its 6-cell battery.
